Soccer Update March 18-2013

Normal practice will start tomorrow. We will practice @ Escalante 4:30- 5:45ish Tuesday and Thursday. Please have your son there, ready to play at 4:30. Just a reminder - practice jersey, water, shin guards, cleats and ball.

Attached you will see the schedule that I just received moments ago. First games will be this Saturday in Farmington - 9am and 2pm. I will not be there and nor will Harry. He has a big ski race. That will make us a bit short. Please let me know ASAP if your son will not be there.

Also - we are going todo two tournaments - The Shootout and Grand Junction Tourney. I have signed the boys up for the Shootout already and I am working on the Grand Junction information. I should have a budget and hotel info for Grand Junction soon.

FIRST SPRING PRACTICE 2013

Morning Everyone...

Lets play some soccer!!! Cole, Sam and myself are so excited to get going...we rented the Stillwater Indoor facility. SO...we will have our first practice this Friday, 4-5-30pm and Stillwater. Please have your son there with all his soccer gear, including some water. Cole and Sam are working on a light, fun, "get back into the swing of things" workout for Friday. They boys will have lots of fun.
Few words about Sam..Some of you guys know Sam, some dont. Sam is a fantastic young man from England. He is here playing soccer at FLC. He has helped us in the past and worked individually with some of the boys in the past. His soccer schedule is pretty hectic in the Fall, but in the Spring, he has some more time to help us. Cole and I are stoked about this. Sam is fantastic and we are very lucky to have him as an additional coach the Spring.
Give or take another snow storm, hopefully we will resume our normal practice schedule next week. Escalante Field, Tuesday and Thursday - 4:30-6:00. I am hoping to have you guys a complete game schedule this weekend.
See you guys Friday!

Parking Gaylord Sheppard

Morning guys... have cash on you this morning to pay for parking at the soccer complex. Also, the line can be up to 15 minutes long. BE PREPARED FOR THAT!!! I think parking cost 10 for the weekend or 5 a day, now sure. I am leaving the hotel by 8:30.

Cole has requested that the boys DO NOT SWIM between matches today. Fearing that they will be too tired for the second match.

HALA UNITED! See you on field 11N - John

  • October 6 - some kids will be playing in Denver. For the kids not going, there is an opportunity to play here in Durango against teams from Cortez. Let me know if you are interested.
  • October 13 - We will have two games in Montrose - times yet to be determined.
  • October 20 - We will have two games in Durango - times yet to be determined.
  • October 27 and November 3rd we are looking to have games here in Durango against some local teams
  • November 10 and 11th we will all goto Albuquerque for the Gaylord Sheppard Tournament. I will be making room reservations this week. Please let me know how many rooms you need, or if your son is traveling with someone else. It is fun if we can all stay together, the boys will love it. I highlighted this because this is when there is a conflict with a tournament that a different team is going too. Cole and I choose togo to the Gaylord Shepard feeling it was a great fit for us.

Cortez 9-29-12

Saturday September 29th we will play a double header in Cortez. They have some great soccer fields and an awesome Rec Center. Might want to take your swim suits and hang out in the pool between games. Our games are at Noon and 4pm. We will need to be there one hour early. Here is a map -

Sept 13, 2012 Demon Game and Update

So far, so awesome!!! The boys are doing great. Coach Cole has really been working on some individual ball skills. Don't be surprised if you see your son outside practicing "the snake" or the "the fake" etc. We have had some small challenges getting the boys to pay 100% attention. Not to worry, I think we took huge steps yesterday to help that. We move at a fast pace during practice and I think the boys are just figuring out - it is tons easier if they focus and pay attention. The team made some great progress with their focus yesterday and I bet that continues.
Our games last week were phenomenal. I am 42 and have been around soccer my entire life in one form or another. Giving Coach Cole credit where credit is due...I learned something last Saturday. Coach Cole taught the boys his 3S system. I was blown away and the boys took to it like ducks to water. The 3 S's (feel free to quiz your son :)) - divide the field into thirds. The back third SAFETY - middle third SIMPLE - front third SPECIAL. I love it. The boys understood it. The boys executed it beautifully. Really enjoyed watching that go thru their brains and come out their feet on the field.
Cole and I also wanted to mention that today the DHS Demons will be playing the #1 ranked team in New Mexico at 5pm @ Riverside. Currently, the Demons are ranked 9th in Colorado. It is going to be a great game and lots of fun to watch. I bet your son would love seeing that game!!!! hint hint.
Next weekend we have the COPA tourney here in Durango. SO FUN!!!!

First Fall 2012 Game TIMES!!!!!!

September 8th we will play two leaugue matches. Both will be at Escalante on field #1 -

9am United vs DYSA Rovers
2:30pm United vs Tri City Cortez Dynamo

Really looking forward to our first matches. THANK YOU FOR HAVING THE BOYS AT PRACTICE ON-TIME AND PREPARED!

Team Building !!!!

First practice was a great success. Thank you to Chris Hughes. The boys were presented with some challenges and had to work as a team to overcome those challenges.

Thanks again for attending our team meeting. Just a few reminders...practice starts at 4:30, please have the boys there and ready togo at 4:30 with cleats, shin guards, water and navy practice jersey.

Off to a great start! Cant wait till our next practice. - John

CORRECTION TO DOUBLE HEADER April 21

We had to flip flop our games on April 21. We will now play at 9am and 11:30.

Pleae let me know ASAP if you are going to miss any games or the tournament. The Shootout is May 11-13. Going to be lots of fun for the boys but we need a set roster. Also, we are going to be short players for our two games during our April Spring break. I am going to re-schedule those matches, but I need to know when everyone will be out of town this season.

On another note...we are very lucky to have Sam helping us. He is great. Practice went great last night. - John

Update - Spring Season 2012 Week #1

Hope everyone is enjoying being back into the swing of soccer.

Week #1 – Weather was not our friend when it came to practice. Unfortunately, we missed our first two practices due to snow. Last week we were able to get two days in and one of those days I felt it best to end practice a bit early, due to rain and cold temps. Hopefully, the weather will be better going forward.

Practice – We worked on getting ball touches and getting back to our practice groove. Tactically we have adjusted our line up. My hopes are that all the boys will be engaged in the game at all times. Also, I am really wanting the boys to challenge themselves and play our of their comfort zones. They need to be able to play any position. This will benefit them huge in the long run. Kate says and I believe, “Some of the best forwards start as defenders and defenders as forwards.” We will be putting this to the test this season. This coming week we will continue to get ball touches, play some small-sided games and work on our fitness.

Game #1 – Win. The boys played phenomenal. They took to the new line up like ducks to water. Instantly, I noted our attacks on goal, involving 5 players - not one or two. Perfect! I anticipate the boys really fine tuning this as the season progresses. We will see them creating better opportunities to score. On a coaching note – You will notice me not giving much direction to the boys during play. They are at the point where they can make decisions without me helping from the sidelines. I want to let the boys steer their play and what we do on the field during matches. I will be looking to them for input.

I get so much enjoyment out of watching these boys mature both on the field and off. They are a special group of young men with all the soccer talent in the world. It’s so great to see them take care of one another both on and off the field. Special shout out to Austin, he was always looking to his team to help find the back of the net.  Saturday they all played very un-selfish soccer and I really took notice. Thanks for letting me coach them.

Once again – Thank you for getting to practice and games on time. Also, thanks for having the boys in their practice shirts, with water and a ball. Makes a big difference. Final note – we have added a game April 21st. We will play a double header that day in Durango.
