The tough competition was no match for DYSA's U 14 girls, Durango En Fuego ('on fire') at the Gaylord Shepperd Tournament on November 19-20. Lead by head coach Bree Baker (FLC assistant coach, women's soccer) and assistant coaches Cassie Seaney and Joe Casey (both freshmen, FLC Skyhawks), the girls finished a strong season by taking the silver bracket championship at the annual New Mexico tournament. Durango En Fuego won its first three games of the weekend 2-0, 2-1 and 3-2; then shut out NM Rush's Barcelona 3-0 for the championship (a team that had bested En Fuego 3-2 in a recent league match.)
"We had a great season, scores aside, because the girls became better in every way--individually and as a team," Baker said. "If every season is like that, you're a lucky coach."
The young team--in just their third season together--finished up a solid season in New Mexico's Duke City Soccer League with a win-loss-tie record of 5-2-1.
